  • Overview

    This position is responsible for working with Pulaski County Public School’s school social worker to develop prevention strategies and objectives to address student dropout rates and truancy issues within the county. This position will be focused on developing and implementing strategies for both individual cases and schools-wide initiatives (indicated and universal prevention efforts) for the purpose of eliminating/ reducing social and emotional barriers to student’s success and reducing mental health risks factors: academic, behavioral, and developmental.


    Tasks to accomplish:

    • Assist with Pulaski County Public School’s truancy intervention programs
    • Initial homeless student interventions
    • Assist the School Social Worker as needed
    • Support Student Assistant Program
    • Assist with parent engagement
    • Coordinate county wide prevention efforts
    • Collaborate with community agencies/stake holders
    • Monitor data for trends and identification for mental health risk factors




    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Social Work or human services related field, with at least one year's experience in a setting working with children with needs in the areas of mental health, substance use, or developmental delay. Masters preferred, but not required. Demonstrated knowledge of case management/social work practices and resources available to help consumers in the community.  Strong communication skills (written and verbal) needed. Experience working with a school system and knowledge of community resources are helpful. Valid Virginia driver's license and safe driving record required.
